  thank you, Andreas - and you are probably right (although there is a lot of colour in South American towns ). Wiki tells me this about St. John's:
  Mean (average) temperatures range from ?4.9 °C in February to 16.1 °C in August. The city is one of the areas of the country most prone to tropical cyclone activity and is one of the rainiest in Canada. Of major Canadian cities, St. John's is the foggiest (124 days), windiest (24.3 km/h) and cloudiest (1,497 hours of sunshine).

  124 days of fog: That does call for compensation. But I don't know if it really is meant like that. It is just a guess.

they look all old and worn as they probably are. They must have seen a lot people come and go. They fit well with the slightly chaotic electrification and the skew power poles. Despite the contrast of the modern cars they stand still in their own time.
