The Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Chapel, located near Ninilchik on the Kenai Peninsula, was built in 1901.
Russian people coming from Kodiak Island in the 1840s, settled there and founded Ninilchik,
their language mainly Russian and a few words from Alaskan Natives.
This church is one of the most photographed sites on the Kenai Peninsula, however, I didn´t know that at this time :-)

Die russische "Kirche von der Verklärung des Herrn" wurde 1946 gegründet, das 1901 errichtete Gebäude ersetzte einen alten Bau.
Die Gemeinde ist noch heute aktiv,
Spuren des alten russischen Dialekts sind immer noch vorhanden.
Diese Kirche gehört zu den am meisten fotografierten Plätzen auf der Kenai Halbinsel, allerdings wusste ich das zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht.

Bei der Übergabe von Rußland an die US durch Alexander Baranov fielen etwa 20.000 orthodox getaufte Einwohner Alaska´s in die Hände von "Wilden". Bis heute werden auch auf den Aleuten viele alte Kirchen von Rußland unterstützt.

…and no wonder it's much photographed! what a picturesque sight indeed! the painted wooden crosses matching the wood of the distinctly russian-orthodox church – beautiful indeed! what i like best about it, though, is the "splotches" of color in the grass, created by wildflowers growing in anarchic happiness ; ) among the graves, adding a charming cheerfulness to the mood of the place! greetings, sabine.
