Snake’s Head

Snake’s head is an endangered bulbous plant, native to Europe, that likes to grow in damp soils of grasslands or river meadows that are regularly flooded.
Flowers between march and may.

Its English name probably refers to the somewhat snakelike appearance of the nodding flower heads on their long stems.

The species exists also as garden plant but nowadays it is rarely found in the wild (even extincted in Belgium, the last official observation dates back to 1899).
However I found this plant growing wild in Belgium, in Losheimergraben, exactly on the border with Germany, but it was about 10 meters on Belgian territory :-))

Dutch name : Kievitsbloem
German name : Schachblume (auch Schachbrettblume oder Kiebitzei genannt)
Latin name : Fritillaria meleagris
