A Mallet in 2009!

Who of us train photographers would´ve expected to encounter a real Mallet locomotive in 2009 on regular trains!

This, I think, is only possible in the eastern Harz mountains in the middle of Germany nowadays, and little Mallet locomotive 99 5906 of the "Harzer Schmalspurbahn" is still going strong these days, giving dependable service on the steep inclines of the Gernrode - Harzgerode and -Hasselfelde line.

She was built by Maschinenbaugesellschaft Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1918, as a true 0-2-2-0 saturated steam compound Mallet, and that´s what she still is today.

My pic dates from February 1st, 2009, when I met the engine in the snowfall on the morning train to Alexisbad near a rocky incline some miles east.

Can you imagine - they do have another two Mallets in servicable, better than new condition, even older - an incredible 110 years of service!

Good to see. There are the articulated Garrets now working in North Wales, but I don't suppose they work in snow in the UK!

Sieht aus wie früher als noch DR an den Wagen stand.

Den kurzen Moment perfekt festgehalten.
Das i-Tüpfelchen sind natürlich Schneeflocken u. die Eiszapfen am Dach des Gepäckwagens...

Super Aufnahme von dieser alten Dame. Ja War ja im Dezember nicht im Einsatz, da sie wegen eines Defekts in der Werkstatt war und 996001 ist bekommt wohl eine Fahrweksuntersuchung. Deshalb waren im Dezember die Harzbullen im Einsatz.

And, there´s even a C´C-Mallet still servicable there!
They all were originally owned by the southern-German Zell-Todtnau-Bahn, then happily were not scrapped but sold to Switzerland!
But all these engines aren´t in regular use any more, just special trains.

I love these old Saxonian engines!
The only other Mallet I know is in use (but not regular service) is at Blonay Chamby, in Valais.
It was also build in Machinenbauges. Karlsruhe!
