      I was told by a resident of the valley - that this particular wall was built by starving, impoverished, Irish immigrants - who came into the area in the 1840's when famine drove them from ireland. The Victorians were very reluctant to give money or food to the poor for nothing - so they would make them do work (breaking rocks , building roads etcetera). This particular wall was one of those public works. mark.

      we have to maintain our curiosity. In country places like this - nothing much happens for decades or hundreds of years - then something extremely dramatic can happen. In the same locality - there are distinct parallel lines on some of the hillsides - which, I'm told - are signs of cultivation from pre-Roman times - when more people lived in the valley than do now. mark.
