Pink Butterfly --- Polygala myrtifolia L.

Im botanischen Garten der Ruhr Universität Bochum steht direkt vor dem Tropenhaus ein Topf mit dieser Pflanze. Polygala myrtifolia, auch als Myrten-Kreuzblume bekannt. Viel weiß man nicht über die Pflanze, außer, dass sie in Süd-Afrika, Australien als auch Neuseeland vorkommen und inzwischen als Neophyt in Korsika und Sizilien einwandern. Als kleine Anekdote kann man noch erzählen, dass solche Kreuzblumengewächse (Polygalaceae) gerne mal verwendet werden, um junge Biologiestudenten auszutricksen, da die Blüten sehr ähnliche zu denen der Hülsenfrüchtler (Fabaceae) aussehen. Eine toll aussehende Pflanze die da an der RUB rumsteht.

Going through the botanical garden of the Ruhr-University Bochum, you’ll find a curious looking plant right before the tropical greenhouse: Polygala myrtifolia, also known as myrtle-leaf milkwort. There is not much known about the plant though. It’s distributed all over South-Africa and partially in Australia as well as New Zealand. Additionally, it seems that the plant is now invading Corsica and Sicily as a neophyte. Maybe as a small little anecdote: this group of plants (Polygalaceae) is often used to fool young biology students due to its very similar flower compared with the Fabaceae (legume family). A very interesting looking plant that I found there at the RUB.
