Meteora monasteries. Central Greece.
Meteora ( from the Greek word "meteoros;" that means suspended in the air.) A place in Central Greece (Thessaly) famous for the many Byzantine monasteries that are built on top of high rocks. The one in the picture is the Roussanou monastery, built in the middle of 15th century and inhabited by nuns. In the old times communication with the ground was only by means of large baskets lifted up by a primitive wheele machinery operated with hands. Now, one can see a ramp connecting the top with the ground.

life at the top with quite a surreal twist to it! amazing capture of an absolutely fascinating place! my very first irrational thought, when looking up the rock, was this: "like something out of poe, 'the fall of the house of usher' maybe…" ; ) as i said: completely irrational… ; )) greetings, sabine.johnboy0506 13. so impressive this architectural gem on the top of the rocks - one marvels at the thought of how it was built ... excellent your view in black and white showing the reach of the monastery into the heavens - and of that precarious bridge !!!greetings, Adele

An interesting how they always built on the top of the rocky area to be secluded:-)) Harold
