Where my Mother Stood
I recall being 5 years old and sneaking into my uncles photo album. My grand mother at the time told me it was Paris France. My mother stood next to the Gargoyles on Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris.
To day I made tat connection in time to touch my mom once more from a promise I vowed to keep. Her brother too old to fly received this image yesterday. My mother lived in Paris for six years sang jazz, and torch songs. She spoke six languages and had a phd in music, what forced to leave Juliard School of music because she was pregnate with me. She told me I was her first degree. They removed her name from the records because women just did'nt get pregnant. I still have all her music books from Jualiard. She was their first person to win a Tony on Broadway as best actress in a musical."Raisin". She was also the first African American Woman to not have to share the award with any one froma another race. She was and in history a pioneer in the arts, and like all African Americans Forgotten. Even by the New York Times.

wow, what a fascinating person your mom must have been! she sure sounds like one intelligent, talented, brave, determined, strong, trailblazing and loving lady!! and that one warm and humorous "line" she gave you to hold on to and cherish all your life – "you are my first degree!" – truly wonderful! your picture and text make her come vividly alive before our eyes! thanks to google, i found a clip on youtube and watched her perform "whole lot of sunshine" on stage (at the tony award ceremony i think). wow, terrific! what power and charisma! read in the obituary that the a critic of the time called her "a vast and loving gibraltar of a woman" – i kind of like that! it expresses her radiant power and warmth beautifully.honored and pleased to meet you, ms. capers! greetings, sabine.
