The Living Forest (69) : Red Admiral
Mostly we see pictures of butterflies feeding on flowers, but I spotted this colourful specimen while he was sunbathing on the warm stony flanks of a deserted quarry in the middle of the forest.
The Red Admiral is living in temperate Europe, Asia and North America.
The species is known to hibernate, but in southern Europe it sometimes flies on a sunny winter day !
Dutch name : Atalanta (syn. Admiraalsvlinder)
German name : Admiral
Latin name : Vanessa atalanta

i've seen them do the same thing: we have a great big boulder by the fence in our backyard. during the recent golden october days that was where they sat and rested after having fed on the asters and dahlias. a great time to take pictures of them these days – they seem much slower than in high summer, although some of them have frayed wings and don't look so bright and pretty anymore. life has taken a toll on their delicate little bodies, i guess ; )). love how yours here is throwing a dainty little shadow with his antennae! lg, sabine.Gunther Hasler 12. Auch am Boden kommt er gut zur Geltung der schöne Admiral!Wenn er hier bleibt, wird er wohl leider erfrieren, aber noch ist es Zeit sich auf den Weg in den warmen Süden zu machen...
