The highway to Shigatse under construction

When I saw a movie from Reinhold Messner the tour from Lhasa to the Holy Kailash mountain in 1985, Reinhold had a venturesome trip on dirty roads, over broken bridges, through the swamp and through river fords.

2004 when we toured to the holy mountain the highway up to Shigatse almost was tarred and solid for trucks and busses.
After Shigatse a sort of dessert was going on and the nice road changed to get a rough path. No gasoline stations on the way just inner towns and villages.
But we saw workers all the time - forcing workers who slave away under hard conditions.

My picture is taken in May 2004 with a NIKON CoolPix 5000.
