The crater

Greece
Aegean Sea
Dodecanese
Island of Nisiros(for more information please refer at the first photo in the series Nisiros.Thank you very much).

Hitting the bottom
Following a path one can safely reach the bottom of the crater after a ten minutes walk. Touching the bottom and stepping on the dusty and rough volcanic earth surface gives a certain feeling of increased heat not entirely false as from several parts gases can be seen eminating from fissures. An intense smell of sulfur(rotten egg) is diffused despite the surgical paper mask that together with moisture and the rapidly rising summer temp turn breathing uncomfortable. The ground color as well as the thickness of ash on many places differ obviously depending on the mineral content and a deep degree of erosion is noticed on the surrounding walls of the crater. In certain days the well known strong Aegean wind blowing istead of improving, as one could think, makes situation worse.

I did the best I could to bring these color variations in my photos as much real as they were and also turned to be in early morning and late afternoon hours. Photoshop was of some help to that.

Splendid colour scheme! You led us from the heights of the surrounding hills down to that sulfuric hole in a wonderful way with these nice photos.
