The ‘Boulté’
This pillar, called the ‘Boulté’, is an old road indication dating from 1566.
Crossing the swamps on foot was a dangerous undertaking in those times (wooden paths were not yet constructed).
It was especially very difficult to orient oneself on the vast and desolate swamp plain.
This was certainly the case during winter when the whole bog land was covered with a thick carpet of snow.
This 4,50m. high pillar that always protrudes above the snow, was often a lifesaving landmark for lost travellers or a confirmation for those who followed the right path.

In the background, one can see the ‘Fischbach’ chapel that I also photographed last winter.
The story that goes with this chapel can be read here
