Still breeding time…

Due to the cold, dark and wet spring that we had this year, bird breeding dropped by half compared to normal and bird spotters think that there is generally a delay of about 4 to 5 weeks.
For some wild animals, the breeding season has now just begun.

So happened with this Eurasian Coot.
This bird likes to built its nest of dead reeds near the riparian vegetation on freshwater lakes.

A female lays usually 5 to 10 eggs (sometimes 2 or 3 times per season, in optimal weather conditions, so surely not this year).

Usually only a few young survive because they are frequent prey for birds such as herons and gulls.

German name : Blässhuhn
Latin name : Fulica atra
