The way up to Ganden Monastery

About 43 km to the east from Lhasa in an altitude of more than 4,300 m the famous monastery Ganden is located. For the way up to the complex it took three hours, by four-wheel-drive-car only half an hour. Some pilgrims do it in the form of Buddhist performing body-length prostrations over the entire length of the way from Lhasa to Ganden.
Ganden was founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa, a famous teacher of Tibetan Buddhism. and was completely destroyed during the rebellion of 1959. In 1966 it was severely shelled by Red Guard artillery and monks then had to dismantle the remains.
In the meantime the monastery is in restoring since 1980 and over 500 monks returned in a new home. Ganden now is a important destination for tourist and other visitors and for its business.
