I think a trunk can be enough as a motive :-)
The composition of the alternative version you did is much better in my opinion. As a combination of the things pointed out in the previous comments, the use of less colours emphasizes the shape much more, and it is more interesting positioned at the side.
I also like this composition more than Roberts alternative. Here you can imagine looking at a part of a bigger circle spanned by the tree itself, as it is bended so hard - which might be the continuation Ruud was looking for :-)
Additionally the background on this side of the tree seems less distracting to me than on the other side, because it has less outstanding features (e.g. not the horizontal line on the ground).

Hi Olivier. I find the subject in this picture quite nice. It just needs a totally different crop to get the right balance in your composition and get the focus in the right place.
I would crop into the trunk at the left side, so the trunk forms the edge of the picture. The tiny branch with just one leaf now becomes the main interest of the picture. The darker forest at the right gives a resting point in the composition. I added a thin white edge to separate the picture from the dark gray background of the website.

Very nice quality. Perhaps it would be better picking up something else more special than merely a trunk for photographing.

Hi, Olivier. I have looked at your "At Sea" photos. When buildings or manmade objects are the subject, then the composition can be strightforward (those photos are well-done, by the way - especially the steps). But here the subject is very organic, so it will be difficult to focus attention on the circle while still making the tree look like a tree. I would probably show much more of the tree, and trust the viewer to see the interesting scar even if it is much smaller.

as ruud mentioned already choose a different point and take the photo again, move the tree in the photo more to the side and you will get a total different effect on it.
i would also prefer not to have that knot and leaves in the foreground, but just only the tree itself.
and also i would try a b/w version, but plain b/w without any color.
