Interesting subject!Photos are very personal...and showing them takes guts !..we all have our way of looking at a picture..sometimes we stand our ground because thats the way we like it...sometimes we get advise and it makes sense...so ..may I give you my piece of cents!!!?
your composition has devided the image in 2 halfs...not showing much but vastness on the right..( maybe include a ship ) ...or angle the pier in such a way by position yourself more in an angle so the pier goes into the image in a diagonal way...a little more colour ( photoshop or sunrise/set ) also a little longer exposure ( camera on a tri-pod ) would soften the water ...or wait for a big storm and include big waves.....
...on the other hand...this may just be what you wanted....so who am I ???!!
