The Fungi World (125) : Red Banded Polypore
What happens when a coniferous tree falls in the forest and no one is there to remove it ?
Well, this fungus gets ready for dinner !
Most fungi live only 3 to 4 days, but there are exceptions, like the Red Banded Polypore.
It’s a horseshoe shaped fungus with a woody and tough texture that can be found all year long.
The fruiting body of this species develops a new white tube layer every year under the shiny red-brown area of last year. The dark gray part on top can be several years old.
Dutch name : Roodgerande houtzwam
German name : Fichtenporling (auch Rotrandiger Baumschwamm genannt)
Latin name : Fomitopsis pinicola

Oh, isn't it beautiful? I love its wet shiny brim and the fungus looks like a shelter against rain for dwarfs or Smurfs:) Bw, ViolaAdele D. Oliver 8. Oktober 2011, 4:05
An excellent capture of this fungus in his surroundings of moss and dead leaves ... so well visible the "rings" telling of his age with the top part looking quite ancient.Beautiful image !!
cheers, Adele

Wundervolle Farben und Formen!! Herrlich, der Pilz und die ihn umgebenden (Becher-?)Flechten! Das Moos und das braune Laub - und dazu das feine Licht - sie sind ein wahrer Farbgenuss...
LG!
