Batak, Bulgaria
this is one of the most historical places here
in this church, during the Ottoman rule, nearly 2000 people were hiding there and died, most of them killed. to give their children some water the mothers digged quite deep whole in the ground with their own hands just to find even a drop... this church is the only building in the town which was not burnt
... and all that situation in Batak can be called the 'casus belli' of the Russo-Turkish War
that on the picture is the ossuary
the picture itself is not something original... just wanted to share that amazing place from my vacation. i hope you all like

The light here is beautiful, the darkness inside is like the darkness of the historical moment (and a great contrast to the light of course); and the frame emphasizes the tragedy that took place here. You always put a lot of thought into your shots and excellent composition.Sergey Laguta 16. August 2006, 15:54
