The petrified forest of Cerro Cuadrado in Patagonia, Argentine is one of the most interesting sites for petrified wood. Especially scarce are the beautiful araucaria conifer cones. The quality is unique and they are among the most sought after petrified wood collectibles. The cones were very hard to get. The layer they were found in was about 18 feet deep and the volcanic tuff is very hard. New finds are no longer coming out. The protection status is now strict, so these great fossils are increasingly hard to get. The details of these fossils are stunning: the seeds of the cones are easily identified, as are the separate petals of the conifer cone.
