Well...special techniques... I will upload the colour variant in a week, is interesting, too. After opening an image in Photoshop I always check the channels. By this one i noticed that the red channel looks very impressive (the statue and clouds become brighter, the sky - darker, the buildings look dramatic etc.), but is too noisy to extract alone. So I applied several filters from PowerRetouche like "studio b/w" where I dragged all "red" sliders to their limits and got the same effect. After that I used "dodge" (for highlites) and "burn" (for shadows) brushes with 6% strength and "painted" slightly on the church to emphasize the texture. Finally I applied Powerretouche "toned photo" (cyan tone) and "sharpen" filters
As to the sunset - it was behind the church, on the statue there was a rosa reflection from the sky. So, in the red channel it became bright.

Very good, indeed! Was it the sun which illuminated the statue this way or is that a digital effect? Anyway, I like it!!Greetings, Martin
