Heligoland isn't just home to northern gannets, of course; there are also a few colonies of guillemots.
The guillemot (Uria aalge) is one of two bird species in the genus Uria within the auk family (Alcidae). It stays on land only during the breeding season.
Guillemot populations are particularly hard hit by human-induced overheating of the Earth's climate system. Between 2014 and 2016, an unusually high sea temperature in Alaska caused the massive loss of around four million guillemots, corresponding to approximately 52 to 78% of the population at 13 colonies. In early February 2019, there was a mass mortality event with tens of thousands of dead birds, with several thousand guillemots washing up on the North Sea coast of the Netherlands. Guillemots have a monogamous seasonal marriage with a high level of breeding site and thus mate fidelity. They breed on the coast on cliff ledges and promontories, as well as on the plateaus of freestanding rock pinnacles. Other seabirds are also tolerated in the colony. No other auk tolerates such close proximity to its nearest neighbor within the breeding colony. During peak season, up to 20 pairs can share one square meter. However, in isolated cases, as many as 50 breeding pairs per square meter have been recorded.

Zwischen 2014 und 2016 verursachte eine ungewöhnlich hohe Meerestemperatur in Alaska den massiven Verlust von rund vier Millionen Trottellummen, was etwa 52 bis 78?% der Population an 13 Kolonien entsprach.Anfang Februar 2019 gab es ein Massensterben mit mehreren Zehntausenden toten Vögeln, dabei wurden mehrere Tausend Trottellummen an der Nordseeküste der Niederlande angeschwemmt.Trottellummen führen eine monogame Saisonehe mit einer hohen Brutplatz- und damit auch Partnertreue. Sie brüten an der Küste auf Klippenbändern und -vorsprüngen sowie auf den Plateaus freistehender Felszinnen. In der Kolonie werden auch andere Meeresvögel geduldet. Kein anderer Alk toleriert innerhalb der Brutkolonie eine so große Nähe zum nächsten Nachbarn. In der Hauptsaison können sich bis zu 20 Paare einen Quadratmeter teilen. Es wurden vereinzelt aber auch schon 50 Brutpaare pro Quadratmeter gezählt.
