Easter Island, a Chilean territory, is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia. Its native name is Rapa Nui. It’s famed for archaeological sites, including nearly 900 monumental statues called moai, created by inhabitants during the 13th–16th centuries. The moai are carved human figures with oversize heads, often resting on massive stone pedestals called ahus. Ahu Tongariki has the largest group of upright moai.

Easter Island has the most remote airport in the worldDirect flights to Easter Island are only available from Chile. Travelers must make a stopover in Santiago de Chile, the capital of the South American country. From there, the Chilean airline Latam Airlines offers direct flights every day. The flight time is around 5.5 hours - another sign of the island's isolation. Anyone arriving from Germany must plan on a mammoth travel time of 36 to 38 hours in total.
Interesting: On the initiative of NASA, the runway at Mataveri Airport was extended to around 3,300 meters. Regular air traffic now benefits from this measure. According to archive articles from the UPI news agency, the airport was once intended as a potential emergency landing site for space shuttles - a scenario that never occurred.
