Coming Home to Poppa
World War Two B-17 "Flying Fortress" bombers never knew if they were going to come home in one piece.
But this old gal, named "Aluminum Overcast," was built after the end of the war in Europe and so
has enjoyed a much safer, more cared for existence, away from the dangers of antiaircraft barrages,
or attacks by squadrons of high performance enemy fighters.
Here, she is returning to Poppa after a day of carrying contented fans in the calm
skies over the Virginia Piedmont on an autumn visit to Manassas Regional Airport.
With some Glenn Miller (*) playing on the airport's tarmac, she arrives at the ramp, ready for some
TLC, a filling of her tanks with AvGas (**), and having her warm radial engines wrapped up for the night.

A wonderful aircraft, easy to fly and forgiving, with not a bad bone in it. But built for a cruel task. And so many 18 or 20 year old airmen lost their precious lives in it.That's all over now and today we can enjoy the wonderful nearly forgotten sound of her big four radials. And that's music in my ears.
