I suppose this is the image you mentioned in your last comment which shows the people on the beach. It is still quite empty. Germany has lakes much more crowded (and politicans beeing much more concerned about it).
By the way - you asked where I am from. The city is called Lünen and situated directly in the north of Dortmund. It is the northern and eastern end of the "ruhr area". You called it "Ruhr" - I am not sure which term is commonly used in English. So I suppose "Ruhr" is better.
Well - I can see Lunen on the Kompass map ( "Ruhrgebiet") - north of Dortmund.
I have only driven through Dortmund.
I haven't visited it.
I have visited Munster, (further north).
Our daughter attended the university there - for several months.
For people coming from the UK the city of Dortmund has not much to offer. My home town Lünen is not really worth a visit for somebody coming from the UK too. Münster is a much better choice.
