First some background information: Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has been in a constant state of eruption for over 25 years. Recently the eruption site moved from Pu`u `O`o to a new location just SE of the previous spot. More recently the lava flow reached the ocean near enough to existing roads that tourists can view it after a short hike.

Last week there was an unusual event that took place within Halemaumau crater, which is a small (1 km) crater within the caldera, or large crater (4 km), which sits atop Kilauea. Gases started exiting a vent on the east wall in huge quantities. I captured the first four shots in this series last Monday, the first from the Volcano House on the eastern side of the caldera. The sky was very overcast that day.
