just an idea but one i have used a few times ... soft focus is great but it does go dead against the cardinal rule of face portraits - focus pin sharp on the eyes ... why not leave the nose, lips and eyes pin sharp and soften the rest - i think that looks great ... and it doesn't look strange at all.
