Carcassonne is a fortified French city, in the Aude département, of which it is the préfecture, in the former province of Languedoc. It is 90 km (56 miles) south-east of Toulouse. It stands in the gap between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central of France.
Carcassonne est traditionnellement divisée en deux, la ville basse et la ville haute (ou cité). Cette dernière est sise sur un promontoire élevé et entourée d'épais remparts depuis le Moyen Âge.

That's a typical view of this ancient city, which has an exciting history. A good perspective and a contrastful photo, the old walls and towers in front of a dark blue sky.
