Matterhorn Starscape

It is 9:21 PM on a crystal clear October night on the Gornergrat (altitude: 3,100 meters/10,170 feet).

The last train on the Gornergrat rack railway departed for Zermatt almost 2-1/2 hours ago – which means the only eyes privileged to take in this vista belong to the guests and staff of the Kulmhotel 3100 and perhaps a passing nocturnal ibex or hawk.

The stars twinkle above the mighty Matterhorn and its massif, which can be seen in the moonlight, although not
as bright to the unassisted eye as they appear here. So, on this special night on the Gornergrat, I decided to
“assist” my eye by seeing how much light my camera and lens could collect from the massif. From the open window
of my room in the Kulmhotel, I made a series of time exposures. In this case, 32 seconds seemed to do it nicely.

Can you hear the quiet?

This is really an impressive photo.
    Fantastic.
I visited Zermatt 18 years ago, it seems I must visit it again.
    Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

Of course the quiet can be heared, if not here, where else?
I dicovered this by myself many years ago in ´92 on a Glacier-Express-tour from Samedan which ended up right here in the Kulm Hotel, a better decision we never took!
The night which started then was unforgettable, hardly did find sleep since every minute we wondered it "it"(The Matterhorn) would still to bee seen in the full-moon night... an it was, until the morning, when we departed back down to Brig on our way home - but that´s another story...

Well done Steve, but, at an exposure time of 32" the stars are starting to become stripes!
And, maybe, I´d have turned the camera a little more to the right, to inherit some more of those mighty 4000ers.
But I´m almost sure you have done m,ore than one exposure, so, let us see!

    Best regards,
    Tom

Yes! The quiet is yelling at me. Outstanding with all the stars at the sky. "Hut ab! und Verneigung". Gorgeous viewpoint.
    Best, Matthias
