I am returning to serious photography after a 3-plus decade absence. Back then I wanted to exhibit in art shows, had a few photos in small shows with good response and was doing b&w and color darkroom work. Have forgotten everything I ever knew it seems but am bitten again, not sure how it happend. I am a writer in between projects and I think my creative yearnings reached out for something to fill the breach until the words started flowing again. Now I plan to write a blog and post photos, before my novel picks up again, which will take front and center. However, after learning a bit about my Panasonic FZ20 have gotten a few good images which have sparked my excitement for visual expression. I am so grateful I found this site because the photos inspire me and Paul and Chip in particular have been so helpful.
Note: Thanks to the helpful advice I've found here, I've traded in the Panasonic for a Canon Rebel XT (350d) and as predicted, I'm in love with it.
Hi Helen,
thanks for your comment in my profile.
Yes, I live in San Francisco as well. It's a great place to take pictures, there are so many sides to this city and California is amazing :-)
Hope I see more of your pictures soon.
Julia
Hi Helen,
Thanks for your comment on my photo "Traces".
I've been viewing your gallery and am impressed - our tastes are in many ways similar. I look forward to seeing more.
Cheers Kathryn
Helen, I know neither you or young Rohan.
However I was about to post a comment on young Rohan's profile, when I saw your inspiring comments.
May I just say, that I was deeply touched by the advice to the young lad!!
It is folk like yourself that inspire the young, rather than offer negative feedback.
Bless you, the world needs more Helen's.
A humble but happy snapper
It's nice to see some impressions from San Francisco. I love the city very much and I locking forward to visit it again with my digitalcam.
Cheers, Tatjana

Hi Helen
nice to read that you like my picture. It is one of those made at a lucky moment. Really two minutes later and the light changed completely...
I had a look to your pics and I was astonished of the way how you see the world. Good work. It is a pity that you stopped snapping about 30 years.
Hi Helen, I noticed that when you wrote to Yolander in Florider, and the trouble you had with over exposed pistures from to strong a light. Well, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but how about neutral density gray filters, these will cut down the level of light transmitted by the sun and you can and allow you to use a wider appatures for creative use I'm sure your nearset camera shop will give you good advice on this.
Regards John.
Hello Helen, thank you very much for your nice comments on my fotos! Certainly I am able to understand your english. Would be a pitty if I wouldn't! I like your pictures a lot and am honoured to communicate with a famous author! ;-) Kind regards Philipp
. Happy to hear that you like it. I took it when I lived in New York. Unfortunately that is now already four years ago... At the end of my stay in the US I also visited San Francisco and it is quite nice to see some pictures from the city made by a person living there. It's quite different from the pix I made as a tourist! :-) But I like them!
Hi Helen,
thanks for stopping by my pictures and for your nice words about them. I'm glad you like them.
With those words I can picture you as a writer :-)
In your profile I see a long history of warm thank you's from a lot of people. I guess it's sort of an honour if "Helen" dropped by! Somehow that's how it feels to me at least. Funny hey?
You have produced a couple of real nice pictures yourself! One I like in particular is the "Marco Island Valve". Strong composition and nice combination of colors.
Hello Helen, thank you very much for your positive note to my pic "old Reichstag Berlin". Now I will take my time to view your photographs...I see, photography is a universal language ;)
Have fun with it - Regards, Jan

i see that you have very good photos too.
Hi Helen,
I can't describe how much I enjoyed your really nice comment in my profile! Thank you so much, I'm happy you like my photos!
I enjoyed your's, too, it's so nice to meet people here in fotocommunity that live in totally different environments! To be honest - I don't want to live in such a big city as San Francisco! But you show us very unusuall points of view; I really like the details of the houses and the roofs!
Keep on and hopefully enjoy your time here in fotocommunity as much as I do!
Best wishes from Iceland - Kerstin
Hi Helen
Thanks for your kind comment on the photo EUGENIA FALLS.This photo was taken in Ontario Canada about 100 Miles north west of Toronto in Feb.2005.

Thanks for all the comments. Out of curiosity, you say you 'started off' with a Panasonic DMC FZ20, what do you use now ? I'm thinking of looking for another and word of mouth is always useful. Cheers.
Hello Helen,
thank you for your friendly comment on my "sea picture". I took the opportunity to look at your pictures - and found them great!! Living at the ocean gives a special feeling of life and a special way of seeing the world.
By the way: I want to visit your homepage but didn't succeed. I don't know why.
Best wishes and kind regards, Ise.
hi helen,
you always pay attention to the details...interesting and refreshing.
although this time both details from your comments where done intentionally( as most of my work lots of details that you see or missing in a picture are done intentionally , i am "tempering" with the images ).
from my point of view , art work can't be symmetrical...symmetry takes away the movement from the art, after a while it looks flat and boring.that's why i cropped the shoe. actually, this image is centered to the woman...for lots of different reasons, to long and to philosophical to write that .now!! i am curios how would you see that?
cheers
michael
PS love your electric coffee , great metaphor
I presume she had lost some of her family members in one the wars we participated in. The Atmosphere at our ANZAC services across Australia are moving.
Thank you very much for your really nice comments. I'm quite new user on that site, so I'm happy that I can find here so nice people as you are.I'm also glad that you like some of my pictures.
Hi Helen,
Thank you so much for your comment on my "crayons" photo. It's a great idea. You have wonderful photos. I really like the raindrops picture. I hope to see more.
Jenn
They're my favourite trees for good reason. I'm pretty sure you'll see them in their incredible variety of colours in our distinctly different seasons up here. They are also within 50 metres (yards) of the SS Klondike in downtown Whitehorse which makes it convenient for me.
Thank you for your comment on my work....creativity is something special - I hope you keep your photography alive and it is just like riding a bike, you never forget.
Look forward to seeing more of your work.
Kind Regards, Nicole.
Thanks so much for your comment and taking the time to go through my photos. :)
You have some really creative pictures...hope to see more in the near future
Take care
Jorge
Hi Helen,
Many thanks for your comments.
I took this shot, and some others, with the standard wide-angle 18-55 mm bought with the camera kit,.
To increase the depth of field you can use a small ISO (100) and a "small" Stop (like 18-22).
When you don't have enough light you should use a tripod.

I just wanted to thank you for your comment on my picture, dad and son hands, I realy appriciated it. I loved the lighting on your tulip picture, and the picture of the bridge was realy a very unique view. My husband is a writter as well, a beginning one, he realy enjoys it and wants very much to make it his carrer. Thanks again. Your pictures have a such a relaxing tone to them, I enjoy that very much. :)
Hey Helen,
Thank you so much nice comment, And for the idea too, I guess I am still learning and I dont believe in tamparred pictures as they loose the original and its not what my spirit will accept. Well i didnt have enough time to work on stairs coz the owner of the place closed the door that I was taking this beautiful picture and I couldnt do much have just a 25th of a min to catch the beauty.
As I am learning I guess I will be making progress with all your support.
Thanks a million for all your support.
God Bless you.
Regards.
Hi Helen, in response to your question. I shoot totaly B&W. I only use color for weddings or some other special occasion. In a color photo a viewer can get caught up in just the color alone. Even if the photo isn't that good they may like it because they like the colors. But in a b&w photo. The photographer is forced to rely totaly on their photographic abilities to produce a well composed image while paying close attention to light and dark tones. I shoot film, Ilford HP5. I also do my own processing and printing. Digital is easier, but film is more fun. If you have any other questions, just ask away.
James
